FASHION WEEK 2009: CUTTING COSTS   Amid current economic turmoil, budget-conscious designers are making use of unconventional means to showcase their creations this season. Labels Mara Hoffman, Sergio Davila, and Nicholas K have combined forces to put on a joint show at Bryant Park, Fashion Week’s main venue. With this, the designers stand to save nearly 40% off the standard costs; the most minimal solo show at Bryant Park costs upwards of $100,000 for 15 minutes of show. The official line-up of designers features 73 names, down from the 80+ of September’s roster and 100-150 of previous years. Even big name designer and our beloved NY Fashion week veterans have forgone the elaborate Bryant Park presentations. Betsy Johnson, renown for her over-the-top shows, will not be showing at Bryant-Park in February. Vera Wang has also opted-out of showing in the tents this month and will be going a more cost-effective route. Ms. Wang will be hosting a show in her brand new Soho boutique with a guest list of roughly 100; dramatically down from the usual 900 Vera Wang attendees. Ouch!
